What is the process for getting a motorbike licence?
STEP 1 – Pre Learner Course
To be eligible for the Pre Learner course you must have held a provisional or open car licence for 1 year.
- Your first step is to book the 2 day Pre Learner course with us. Please note you must complete both days within 30 days of each other.
STEP 2 – Motorcycle Knowledge Test
To be eligible to sit the motorcycle knowledge test you must have completed the 2 day Pre Learner Course.
- Your next step is to sit the Motorcycle Knowledge Test with the Department of Transport. You can sit the test online, or visit your nearest Department of Transport.
- Once you have successfully completed the online knowledge test you will be issued with your motorcycle learners licence (RE L).
You are required to hold your learners for a 3 month period. During this 3 month learner period you can ride as long as you are accompanied by someone who has their restricted or unrestricted motorcycle licence. You can ride any LAMS approved bike.
STEP 3 – RE Licence Course
To be eligible for the RE licence course you must have held your motorcycle learners (RE L) for 3 months.
- Your next step is to book the 1 day RE licence course to upgrade to your restricted motorcycle licence (RE O).
- Once you have demonstrated your competency we will issue you with an online QRide certificate. You are then required to upgrade your licence online or by visiting your nearest Department of Transport center.
On your restricted (RE O) motorcycle licence you can ride any LAMS approved bike unsupervised. For the first 12 months you are unable to carry a pillion passenger and you must have zero alcohol in your system when riding.
If you wish to upgrade your licence you are required to hold your restricted (RE O) licence for 2 years before you are eligible to upgrade. However, if you are happy riding LAMS bikes you can stay on your restricted licence.
STEP 4 – R Licence Course
To be eligible for the R licence course you must have held your restricted (RE O) motorcycle licence for 2 years.
- Your next step is to book the 1/2 day R licence course to upgrade to your unrestricted motorcycle licence (R).
- Once you have demonstrated your competency we will issue you with an online QRide certificate. You are then required to upgrade your licence online or by visiting your nearest Department of Transport center.
On your unrestricted (R) motorcycle licence you can ride any size motorbike.
Can i go straight for my unrestricted (R) bike licence if i am over a certain age?
No, you are unable to go straight for your R (open) licence if you are over a certain age. You will need to follow the licence process which can be found in our first FAQ.
Do i need to hold my motorcycle learners licence (RE L) for a certain amount of time?
As of the 1st October 2016 once you get your motorcycle learners permit you will need to hold it for 3 months before you are eligible to upgrade to your (RE) restricted licence.
If you had your motorcycle learners permit prior to the 1st October 2016 you can come and do your QRide (RE) Restricted licence course whenever, there is no waiting period.
Can i use my own bike for my QRide Licence course?
Yes, you can use your own bike for your QRide course
- If you are upgrading to your RE O licence, your bike must be LAMS approved, road worthy and registered
- If you are upgrading to you R licence, your bike has to be an R class unrestricted bike (it cannot be a LAMS approved bike), road worthy and registered
Can i take a pillion passenger?
Learners Permit (RE L) – no you can not take a pillion passenger
Restricted Licence (RE O) – you must have held your (RE) provisional licence for 12 months to be eligible to take a pillion passenger
Unrestricted Licence (R) – once you have your (R) open licence you are able to take a pillion passenger, provided your motorbike allows it
Do i need a bike licence to do a Speciality or Advanced course?
No, you do not need a bike licence to do an Advanced Course or Speciality course as they are held on private training ranges
